Dog Holes drilled

the worktop dog holes are all drilled straight thru. they are all 3/4" wide and over an inch deep.

Dog holes started

the dog holes have been drilled about halfway, or enough that the forstner bit can sink under the surface, allowing the drilling jig to lay flat.

Bench dogging system prep

I have punched the center of all the bench dogs, to guide my 3/4" forstner bit to the middle and I have my doweling jig out to guide the bit straight.

Vice Layout revised

In layout for the vices and bench dogs earlier I had forgot to allow for the vice support rails, I tried to add them after but in the end i just flipped over the bench top and started fresh. As you can see by the layout penciled in, the vice has support rails 3" away on both sides. It makes sense to share those support rails, and that is what you can see below. This way a single vice can be used at any position on the table.

Bench Top Layout

I have done the layout for the workbench top. Dog holes (3/4") are to be located at the intersection of the red lines, and the relief for the threaded rod (5/8") is the green line.

Removeable Pegs

I have pegged (with 1/2" dowel) the mortises used for joining the bed, these are dry fit so they can be removed for moving the bed. I also flush trimmed the tenons that I pegged.

September Update

I have had a busy summer, so I apologize  for a lack of updates. I have made some progress on the heavy duty queen sized bed. I have constructed the outer frame, with headboard, and footboard.

I have test fitted the bed with a boxspring and mattress but that left for little headboard or footboard. that meant that I must make the base with plywood. I still need to build support for the base.

here is the bed with a plywood base, which still requires support under it.

here is the bed with matress and boxspring

Laundry hanger

Tonight I took a break from the bed to make this laundry hanger to go over my hope chest that I made a few years ago.

I used screws and angle brackets for quick joinery. Had I used mortise and tenon it would have taken a week to build.

Angled through mortise

Chiseling a through hole mortise sure looked allot easier on video. But because of the depth and angle, doing the work by hand is preferred.

Finding the angle

My wife has requested that our bed have a 6 inch rise so I needed a way to find the angles to keep the headboard and footboard square.

Pairing lumber

I have gone through some lumber matching 2x3's for the heavy duty bed frame.  Two sets of boards will be three boards wide for the side rails and one set will be doubled up for the posts.

Platform underside painted

Instead of wasting valuable stain and varnish on parts of the bed unseen, I have been protecting the wood with paint that was colour matched to a sample of stained wood.

Bed stained

I have stained the wood with a rosewood stain, I am very pleased by the results. I did not stain the slats however as the mattress would cover that anyway.

Tapping bolt holes

My markings for the tap locations were off, so I just attached the brackets to the headboard and footboard then clamped those upside down to the platform to get the exact places drilled and tapped.

Marking brackets

Clamped the bed together with the angle brackets to mark there exact positions for drilling and mortising.

Bed frame glue up

Gluing the bed frame used up all the cargo tie straps I had. I don't own large enough clamps for the task, but the ratchet tie straps made an excellent substitute.

Footboard dryfit

Finished dry fit of the footboard. It holds together without glue and stands on it's own.

Plywood cut

Plywood cut to one inch over the size of the opening in the headboard and footboard.

Cutting plywood

As the cut I need to make in the plywood is too big for my radial arm saw, I must use plywood on sawhorses with a straightedge as a skill saw guide.

Headboard and footboard frames

Dry fitting of the headboard and footboard frames

Split height mortise

I have cut the tenon for the split height mortise joints. The easiest way is to cut the 1 inch deep mortise, then after to cut the half inch deep notch as if it were its own mortise

New tenon style

As it is Friday the 13th mistakes were bound to happen.  I cut the original headboard too short and the tenons cracked the ends. I am using it in the footboard, the tenon will just have to be offset.

Bed platform

Dry fit of complete bed platform, looks good.

Headboard mortise and tenon

I have mortise and tenon jointed the headboard. Dry fit looks good

Headboard frame

Tonight I cut the frame of the headboard for the double bed to size and marked all of the mortise and tenon joints.
